Detective Superintendent Andy John, senior investigating officer in the April Jones investigation, has spoken outside court.
He described Mark Bridger as an 'evil and manipulative individual' who had 'gone to enormous lengths' to destroy evidence, but said the case against him was 'overwhelming'.
The Deputy Chief Constable of Dyfed Powys Police has released a statement saying: "I am delighted that justice has been done, and that Mark Bridger has been sentenced to a whole life tariff and will never be released from prison."
But Jackie Roberts added: "Despite this outcome, we still cannot begin to imagine how the Jones family will continue family life without their daughter April."

We would like to thank our family and friends and the community of Machynlleth, who without their support we do not know how we would have got through the last seven months since April was so cruelly taken from us.
We would like to thank the media for the respectful way in which they have reported April's story, and would like to take time now to be with our family and to try and come to terms with the loss of April.
Mark Bridger has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a whole life order by Judge Mr Justice Griffith Williams.
It means the 47-year-old will never be released.
– Mr Justice Griffith Williams
For the last four weeks the court has listened to compelling evidence of your guilt. You are a pathological liar.
There is no doubt in my mind you are a paedophile.
You set out to find a little girl to abuse. You were on the prowl for a young girl. April would not have been afraid of you.
You abducted April for a sexual purpose and then murdered her and disposed of her body to hide the evidence.
