Welsh Government will consider car smoking ban

The Welsh Government says it will consider the 'possibility' of legislation to ban smoking in cars, but that it will first wait for its' campaign against smoking in cars to end.

The Fresh Start Wales campaign, which encourages people not to smoke in cars, comes to an end in March. The Welsh Government says it will wait to assess the impact this campaign has had before considering whether to ban smoking in cars altogether.

The amendment to the Children and Families Bill, voted on in Westminster yesterday, gives both the UK Government and the Welsh Government powers to ban smoking in cars carrying children if that course of action is chosen.

The Fresh Start Wales campaign, which encourages parents and others to keep cars carrying children smoke-free, comes to an end in March this year. We have consistently stated that we will consider the possibility of legislation once we have fully evaluated the impact of the campaign. We have commissioned studies of children’s exposure to second hand smoke in cars and results will be available in the summer.

Smoking in cars should be banned period! You can't eat or drink behind the wheel so why should you be allowed to smoke?

Smoking is not good I agree but I am hooked. Common sense is needed in everything. I don't smoke in the house, even in this weather I go outside, to make yet another law is outrageous. The police have bigger issues to deal with.

Why do we need a ban on smoking in cars with children? It's common sense to most people not to do it.
