A scout leader, a foster carer, a former police officer, and a social service manager are among 59 people in Wales arrested in a UK-wide operation against suspected paedophiles.

The six month long operation targeted people accessing indecent images of children online.

It has to date seen 660 arrests with more than 400 children across the UK safeguarded.

The arrests by Welsh police forces are as follows:

  • Dyfed Powys Police - 7 arrests and 5 children protected
  • Gwent Police - 14 arrests and 14 children protected
  • South Wales Police - 30 arrests and 23 children protected
  • North Wales Police - 8 arrests

The total arrests by Welsh police forces is now 59 people.

The unprecedented six-month operation has led to the arrest of 660 suspects.

The operation targeted people accessing indecent images of children online. It has stayed covert until today in order to protect children, identify offenders and secure evidence.

51 suspected paedophiles arrested in Wales

51 people have been arrested across south and mid Wales, as part of a police operation against suspected paedophiles.

They include a scout leader, a foster carer, a former police officer, and a social service manager.

So far, 12 people have been charged with offences related to possessing and distributing indecent images of children.

Scout leader and ex-police officer among 51 arrested

A total of 51 people were arrested across south and mid Wales as part of a UK-wide operation.

The six month long operation targeted people accessing indecent images of children online.

Of the 51 arrests in the force areas of Gwent, South Wales and Dyfed-Powys two were registered sex offenders. Several of those arrested had unsupervised access to children including a scout leader and a foster carer.

Other local arrests included a former police officer and a social service manager.

Charging decisions are awaited in most cases but so far 12 people have been charged with offences of possession and distribution of indecent images of children.

As a result of the operation 42 children have been protected, and 16 safeguarded within south and mid Wales.

This has been a huge operation where we have targeted numerous offenders accessing child abuse images. The majority of these people may have thought they were operating under the radar but we were able to identify them and this sends a strong message to other offenders – you will be caught.
