Patients' complaints review will be England-only

The review of patients' complaints which Ann Clwyd will carry out will be restricted to the health service in England, the UK Department of Health has confirmed. That's despite the Cynon Valley MP's personal complaint about the treatment of her dying husband relating to a hospital in Cardiff.

Her appointment by the Prime Minister comes as part of his initial response to severe criticism of failings at Mid Staffordshire Foundation NHS Trust. But she won't look at complaints from patients in Wales because control over the health service here in Wales is devolved to the Welsh Government.

The Welsh Health Minister, Lesley Griffiths, won't give a detailed response yet but has issued this statement:

I believe in Wales we have robust systems in place to ensure quality and safety are at the heart of NHS care. A recent survey showed 92 per cent of people here are satisfied with that care, however, we are not complacent. We are striving for excellence and will examine the Francis report in detail to see what can be learnt to ensure the systemic failures of the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust are never part of the culture of the NHS here in Wales.

Ann Clwyd: patients' complaints should be acted on

Cynon Valley MP Ann Clwyd says her appointment by the Prime Minister to advise on the way patients' complaints are handled by the NHS in England is a welcome opportunity to make sure the concerns of patients, families and whistleblowers are acted on.

David Cameron asked her to take on the role as part of his response to of a damning review into failings at the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust and because [she'd spoken of her concerns over her dying husband's treatment in hospital. Today she said:

I welcome the opportunity to play an active role to help find a solution to one of the long list of problems we now have with healthcare in so many of our hospitals. I am determined that the result of this review will be a system that ensures that any complaint that patients or whistleblowers make will be listened to, and acted upon. As the Patient’s Association said yesterday, every complaint is a chance to improve services, and to ensure mistakes are not repeated.
