ITV Wales wins BAFTA Cymru awards for Best News Coverage and Current Affairs

ITV Cymru Wales picked up two awards at Sunday's BAFTA Cymru ceremony.

Our news programme won Best News Coverage for the verdict in the trial of April Jones' killer Mark Bridger.

It's a recognition of the journalism, of the technical efforts that go into broadcasting, but ultimately we can't lose sight of the suffering of April's family themselves and what they went through at that awful time.

– Andy Collinson, Programme Editor

Our current affairs programme for S4C Y Byd ar Bedwar won Best Current Affairs programme for Trychineb y Teiffwn.

Griff Rhys Jones was also named Best Presenter for his ITV series 'A Great Welsh Adventure'.

The BAFTA Cymru news award goes - belatedly - to ITV

BAFTA Cymru Chairman Dewi Vaughan Owen presented the award to Phil Henfrey, Head of News and Programmes at ITV Cymru Wales.

ITV Cymru Wales has been given the BAFTA Cymru award for best news programme.

We should have been given the gong at the ceremony at the Wales Millennium Centre on Sunday night, but an administrative mix-up meant the wrong winner was announced.

We were chosen for the award for our coverage of the disappearance of Machynlleth schoolgirl April Jones, on our news programme Wales Tonight.

BAFTA Cymru says it has "apologised unreservedly" to all three broadcasters nominated for the News Coverage Award.

Phil Henfrey, Head of News and Programmes at ITV Cymru Wales, said “We are grateful to BAFTA Cymru for rectifying the error. The Award is recognition for the great work carried out by the ITV News team in Wales. We would like to dedicate the Award to the memory of April Jones.”

Our Y Byd ar Bedwar production for S4C won best Current Affairs Programme for its investigation Marwolaethau Cyffuriau Mon into drugs deaths on Anglesey.
