So why are 3,000 heritage buildings on the verge of falling down? Wales this Week investigates the matter in a programme that'll be broadcast on ITV1 Wales tonight.
Architectural historian Mark Baker is calling for local authorities to do more to preserve buildings under their control, blaming a "lack of understanding" on the part of councils to properly maintain important sites.
"They have a fear they'll end up with the bill" he says.
