Dyfed Powys Police say that a 45 year old surfer died on Saturday after getting into trouble at Freshwater West in Pembrokeshire.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency say that they attended the beach following a call from the Ambulance service to request help.
A team from St Govans Coastguard Rescue Team recovered the man from the water before he was airlifted to Withybush Hospital but he failed to recover consciousness.
A post mortem is expected to take place on Tuesday.
Milford Haven Coastguard says a surfer has been taken to hospital after being pulled from the water unconscious at Freshwater West, in Pembrokeshire.
The coastguard received a call shortly before 9am this morning.
The surfer was taken by air ambulance to Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest.
