Neath soldier's regiment 'devastated' at loss

An Army spokesman says comrades from 1 Royal School of Military Engineering Regiment are 'devastated' by the death of Neath soldier, Sapper Josh Thomas.

The 18-year-old's body was pulled from the River Medway off Rochester Pier in Kent at around midday yesterday.

His next of kin have been informed and specially-trained officers from the Army and police are supporting his family at this very difficult time.

The Regiment is devastated at the loss of this bright young soldier, and the thoughts of everyone at Chatham Station go out to his family and friends.

A body found in the river off Rochester Pier has been formally identified as that of missing Neath soldier Josh Thomas.

The body was found in the River Medway yesterday afternoon.

Kent police say they are not treating the death as suspicious and a report has been prepared for the coroner.

The 18-year-old soldier from Brompton Barracks had been reported missing on Wednesday 10th April after a night out with friends.

Officers investigating the disappearance of Neath soldier Josh Thomas have released images of cyclists they are urging to come forward to help with the enquiry.

The two males are seen riding along Corporation Street in Rochester minutes after Josh had been seen just after 1am.

Kent Police say further CCTV footage shows a white lorry with the word ‘Sunlight’ emblazoned across the side, which is seen to drive along the street just minutes after Josh was last sighted.

The father of a missing soldier from Neath is travelling to Kent today to help search for him.

Josh Thomas, who is based at Brompton Barracks, Chatham, was last seen outside the City Wall pub in Rochester on Wednesday April 10, after a night out with friends.

Friends have set up a Facebook group appealing for information as to the 18 year old's whereabouts. His family made an emotional appeal earlier this week for Josh to get in touch and today his father, Gary, is heading to Kent to join the search.

Josh is described as white, around 5ft 9in tall, of slim build, with short dark brown hair. He was wearing a dark blue Lyall and Scott jumper with a white and red collar, grey jeans and white Converse trainers.

Police say they are are growing increasingly concerned about Josh Thomas who was last seen by a friend outside the City Wall pub in Rochester last Wednesday.

The 18 year-old is seen walking on the city's bridge bridge just before 1am when a black hatchback is seen stopped next to him.

Kent police say the car drives off, then reverses back for the person or persons in the car to talk again to the young soldier.

The last image shows Josh who is from Neath on a traffic island outside the Crown pub.

His family are due to travel to Kent on Thursday to help with the search

Police are appealing for two people on BMX bikes who were seen close to the scene where missing Neath soldier Josh Thomas went missing during a night out in Rochester, to come forward.

Kent police say they could help provide information in the search for the teenager.

Officers say two males riding small BMX bikes along Corporation Street were seen on CCTV just minutes after Josh.

They are then seen riding along the High Street, heading back towards Rochester at just before 2am.

Josh was last seen in the early hours of last Wednesday morning.

Missing soldier's father says he was 'chirpy' when they last spoke

The family of missing soldier Josh Thomas have made an emotional appeal for him to get in touch.

The 18 year old who is based at Brompton Barracks, Chatham, was last seen outside the City Wall pub in Rochester on Wednesday April 10, after a night out with friends.

His father told ITV News that it was totally out of charachter and said he spoke to him on Tuesday night and he sounded 'chirpy as anything.'

Gary Thomas said that they had been going out to celebrate the end of their exams.

Friends of a soldier from Swansea who has gone missing during a night out in Kent have started a group asking for help to find him on Facebook.

The group on the social network site is asking for anyone who may have seen Josh Thomas to get in touch with the police.

The 18 year old, who is based at Brompton Barracks, Chatham, was last seen outside the City Wall pub in Rochester on Wednesday April 10, after a night out with friends.
