Eileen Younghusband: 'Completely surprised'

91-year-old Eileen Younghusband from Sully in the Vale of Glamorgan has been awarded a British Empire Medal. She's a veteran of the Women's Auxiliery Air Force from the Second World War.

She's received the honour for her service for lifelong learning - having done a degree at 87, and become a campaigner against cuts to adult education provision.

Several Welsh politicians have also been recognised on the New Year Honours list. Liberal Democrat MP Roger Williams has been given a CBE for public and political service.

Dr Rodney Berman, who was the Liberal Democrat leader of Cardiff Council until May 2012, has been given an OBE for services to local government and the community in Cardiff.

Justine Pickering, who founded a respite centre in Barry for people with early-onset Alzheimer's and their families, has been given an MBE. She has been recognised 'for services to people with dementia and for charitable services to the NSPCC.'

Justine's mother was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's. She opened the 'Ty Hapus' centre last year. It's the first support centre of its kind in Wales - offering facilities both for people with dementia and a cafe area for their families.

Sir Dave Brailsford: 'It will take some getting used to'

Dave Brailsford, the British cycling director from North Wales, who has been knighted as part of the New Year Honours list, says it sounds 'weird' to be referred to as 'Sir' and 'it's going to take some getting used to.'

The 48-year-old, who's from Gwynedd, insists he's 'the lucky one' to be recognised for 'very much a team effort.' He's famous for his coaching philosophy of finding 'marginal gains', and shares a secret of his success here - 'clarity' of purpose is vital for any sports team.
