500 to attend memorial service of Mecca crash victims

500 people are expected to attend a service at a Newport mosque today to remember five members of the same family who were killed in Saudi Arabia on Friday 8th February.

Shokat Ali Hayat, his wife Abida, eldest son Mohammed Isshaq, daughter Zainub and Mohammed’s wife, Bilques, died while on a pilgrimage to Mecca. A one-year-old boy survived the crash with a broken arm and fractured ribs.

Relatives of the Hayat family who travelled to Saudi Arabia to attend the funeral and bring the little boy home returned to the family's home in Newport yesterday evening.

The service is due to be held at 2pm at the Jamia Hanfia Rizvia Mosque.

Memorial service planned in Newport for Saudi crash family

A one year-old boy injured in a car crash which killed five of his family from Newport has been discharged from hospital in Saudi Arabia.

Shaukat Ali Hayat died along with his wife, his eldest son, his daughter and his daughter in law. Mohammed Eisa Danial Hayat was the only survivor.

A memorial service for the family will be held at Newport's Jamia Mosque at 2pm on Sunday.

Tributes to Newport family killed in Mecca crash

Five members of the same family have died in Saudi Arabia while visiting from their home in Newport. The group was killed when the taxi they were using crashed into a motorway bridge.

Shaukat Ali Hayat died along with his wife, his eldest son, his daughter and his daughter in law who was heavily pregnant.

A one year old child was the only survivor. He was found, injured but alive, in his grandfather's arms. Today, the family was remembered during a service at their local mosque in Newport.

Five members of Newport family die in pilgrimage crash

Five members of a family from Newport have been killed in a taxi crash during a pilgrimage to Mecca in the Middle East.

Shokat Ali Hayat, his wife Abida, eldest son Mohammed Isshaq, daughter Zainub and Mohammed’s wife, Bilques, were killed in Saudi Arabia on Friday. It is understood that a one-year-old survived the crash and is now in hospital with a broken arm and fractured ribs.

There will be a service today at the Jamia Hanfia Rizvia Mosque in Commercial Street.

A Foreign Office spokesman said it was assisting the relatives.

The South Wales Argus newspaper has reported that one of the family members killed was due to be married this weekend.
