Ynys Mon rider seriously injured in Island Games crash

An Ynys Mon cyclist taking part in the Island Games in Jersey has been taken to hospital following a serious crash.

The accident happened between two women cyclists as they sprinted to the finish line. The Ynys Mon rider and another from Bermuda were competing in the Town Criterium race when they crashed.

The roads of St Helier were closed for a short time by police but re-opened just before 3pm.

Both women were taken to hospital. A meeting is expected to take place shortly to decide whether the men's Town Criterium race - due to take place tonight - will still go ahead.

Rosemary Butler, the Presiding Officer of the National Assembly, accepting Ieuan Wyn Jones' resignation. The former Plaid Cymru leader has stepped down with immediate effect to take up a role heading Menai Science Park. His resignation triggers a by-election for his Ynys Môn seat.

Labour's by-election hopes

The battle for Ieuan Wyn Jone's Assembly seat has already begun. Anglesey's Labour MP has issued this statement:

It’s decision time for Ynys Môn and the choice couldn’t be clearer. Plaid refuses to back Wylfa B and the 6,000 jobs it would bring to our Island. Only a Welsh Labour AM for Ynys Môn, backed by the Party of Government would be able to deliver for local people. All Plaid want to do is protest from the sidelines.

Former Plaid leader's resignation confirmed

The former Plaid Cymru leader Ieuan Wyn Jones has formally resigned as an AM. His resignation was accepted by the Assembly's Presiding Officer, Rosemary Butler.

Ieuan Wyn Jones will be a great loss to the National Assembly for Wales, having made so many thoughtful and passionate contributions in the Chamber over the past fourteen years.He led his party with great dignity and authority, as well as diligently representing his constituents from Ynys Môn. He will be sorely missed, but on behalf of all Assembly Members I would like to thank him for his contribution and wish him well in his new career.

Mrs Butler must now confirm the date of the Ynys Môn by-election, which is expected to be on August 1. Until then Labour will have a majority of one over all other parties in the Senedd.


Ieuan Wyn Jones 'to stand down immediately'

Ieuan Wyn Jones has announced he will stand down from the Assembly with immediate effect, triggering a by-election for the Ynys Môn seat.

The former Plaid Cymru leader said he 'felt an early by-election would be preferable' in order for a new Assembly Member to be elected before the start of the new term in September.

On Tuesday, Mr Wyn Jones announced his intention to stand down in order to take on the challenge of leading the new Menai Science Park.

Ieuan Wyn Jones: 'no rush' to call Ynys Mon by-election

"I'll actually be starting in the job in July, and then I'll be discussing with the party locally the precise that at which I'll be standing down from the Assembly" Ieuan Wyn Jones tells ITV News.

"That is something which we're currently in no rush to do because there's just been a local government election and people are exhausted after that."

Kirsty Williams, the leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, has paid tribute to Plaid Cymru's Ieuan Wyn Jones who's announced he's stepping down from the Assembly.

On personal level Ieuan never showed me anything but the utmost kindness and courtesy...Undoubtedly the referendum for further powers was greatly assisted by his contribution. I wish him well as he leaves this chamber.
