200 people given medical treatment at Royal Welsh Show

With temperatures expected to hit the high twenties at the Royal Welsh showground today, St John Ambulance is advising people to cover up and stay hydrated.

Their warning comes as a man was taken to hospital with 40-50% first degree burns from spending all day in the sun yesterday.

The patient was treated with morphine and intravenous fluids before being taken to Swansea’s Morriston Hospital for specialist burns treatment.

A spokesperson for St John said:

  • 206 people were treated yesterday for heat-related illnesses, cardiac issues and fractures
  • Five were taken to hospital
  • Three of those were conveyed by Air Ambulance
  • It brings the number treated so far to more than 600 compared to 480 for the entire show last year

St John Ambulance staff are handing out free sunscreen at the show to encourage people to stay safe in the sun.
