Llanelli Town councillors threw out a proposal for their authority to break away from Carmarthenshire County Council at a meeting last night.
The idea came from the mayor, Winston Lemon, who says Llanelli has been neglected by the larger authority, and radical change was needed to bring in jobs and revive the town centre.
