A Cardiff mother convicted of murdering her seven-year-old son has been given a a 17-year jail sentence. Sara Ege beat her son Yaseen because he did not learn passages of the Koran.
She was given a four-year concurrent sentence for perverting the course of justice. She collapsed in the dock at Cardiff Crown Court as she was being taken away.
The judge said that Yaseen suffered 'prolonged cruelty which culminated, on the day of his death, with what can only be described as a ferocious beating.'
Yaseen's father, Yousef Ali Ege, was found not guilty of causing or allowing the death of his son by failing to act
