Patients evacuated after fire at Wrexham Maelor Hospital

Patients, including children in a special care unit, had to be evacuated at Wrexham Maelor Hospital last night after a fire.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service says a small fire started at around 11.30pm, on the ground floor, in a room near the outpatient ward.

24 patients from two wards on the second floor were evacuated, and three children from an adjacent special care unit were also evacuated as a precaution.

They were returned to the unit after the fire was put out, while the other patients are still being cared for elsewhere at the hospital.

The cause of the fire is being investigated, but is thought to be accidental.
