The number of single use carrier bags used in Wales fell by 76 per cent between 2011-2012 according to recycling organisation WRAP.

Wales was the only country in the UK to show a reduction, with carrier bag usage in the UK as a whole rising by 1.3 per cent.

Natural Resources Minister Alun Davies said: "These figures are testament to the success of Wales' 5p bag charge which was introduced in 2011.

"They support what we already know, which is that in the run up to the introduction of the charge, and since its implementation people in Wales have drastically changed the way they shop."
