A spokesman for Caledonian Travel said that the coach driver, who is from Greenock in Scotland, needed surgery to his leg and his wife was travelling to Wales to see him.
He added that despite the Caledonian Travel logo being on the vehicle, it was not carrying their passengers, but was operated by Gibson Coaches.
Gibson coaches confirmed the passengers were an Argentinian youth rugby team and they were on their way from Cardiff to Bath.
