Kelvin Newton sentenced to life for Assia Newton murder

A man from Bridgend who murdered his wife with a dog lead has been sentenced to life in prison.

Kelvin Newton, 45, strangled Assia Newton, 44, with a dog lead at their home in Pencoed, near Bridgend. She was found dead on July 14 last year.

Newton murder 'born out of sexual jealousy'

“This was a tragic incident which brought shock and sadness to the community of Pencoed as Assia Newton was the victim, of domestic abuse which ultimately led to her death" said Detective Inspector Paul Peters from South Wales Police.

Judge Eleri Rees described the killing as "born out of... sexual jealousy" after Newton discovered his wife was planning to leave him.

“There is no place in today’s society for individuals to be subjected to domestic abuse and South Wales Police will not tolerate incidents of this nature" said Detective Superintendent Lorraine Davies.
