RNLI holds memorial service for HMS Thetis

The Thetis nose-dived until her bow met the seabed during sea trials. It later flooded.

RNLI volunteers from Llandudno and Moelfre are holding a memorial service today to mark the 75th anniversary of the HMS Thetis submarine disaster.

A total of 99 men lost their lives when the submarine got into difficulty while on sea trials off the north Wales coast on 1st June 1939.

Lifeboats from Llandudno and Moelfre will meet at the position of the accident out at sea and lay wreaths at 1.40pm - the exact time Thetis began her three-hour trial dive.

Only four men managed to escape the submarine. 99 men lost their lives in the disaster
