Protest over Barmouth Bridge closure

More than 150 people have gathered at Barmouth Bridge in Gwynedd to protest against plans which could see its footpath and cycle path shut. Residents say that will lead to a 16 mile detour. The bridge is part of the Wales Coast path and stretches across the Mawddach Estuary.

Today's demonstration was held in a bid to urge Gwynedd Council to abandon its proposal to cut an annual maintenance grant of thirty thousand pounds to Network Rail. It's part of the council's attempt to make nine million pounds worth of savings a year.

More than thirty thousand people have already signed a petition supporting continued access between Barmouth and Fairbourne.
