South Wales Fire and Rescue Service says around 50 firefighters have been tackling a blaze at the rear of a Cardiff restaurant.

Eleven appliances and other specialist equipment were called to La Shish in City Road just before 3.45 this morning.

Four crews and a support team are still at the scene damping down.

City Road was closed in both directions between St Peter's Street and Newport Road / Glossop Road but has now re-opened.

A nearby student accommodation block was evacuated as a safety precaution. But fire fighters say all are safe and have now returned.

There are no reports of any injuries.
