Two arrests and 100 homes evacuated in explosives operation

Two men have been arrested in Cheltenham today [Friday] during a planned police operation looking into the potential misues of explosives.

A hundred houses have been evacuated after police made a discovery while searching a garage in Buttermere Close. The bomb disposal team is at the scene this evening.

A 52-year-old man was arrested under the Explosive Substances Act in the Hester's Way area of the town earlier.

A 31-year-old man has also been arrested and a bomb disposal team has been called in to assess the scene.

A 100-metre cordon was put in place around Buttermere Close which has now been extended to 200-metres.

Gloucestershire Police say residents are unlikely to return home tonight.

The police are treating this as a criminal matter, not as a matter of terrorism.
