The search for a missing woman from Filton has come to a tragic end. Police reported that officers trying to find Mary Street, who was 68, found the body of a woman in Winterbourne yesterday lunchtime [Thursday].

This is a desperately sad conclusion to an extensive search for Mary. I would like to extend my sympathies to Mary's family at what must be an extremely difficult time for them.

Over the past few days we have received help from the public in raising awareness of Mary's disappearance. I am grateful for the help everyone has given.

As Mary's family come to terms with this news I would ask that their privacy is respected

The discovery follows a police appeal for help to find Mary. She had dementia and disappeared from her care home in Southmead Road early on Saturday.

Earlier this week, officers put up posters in shopping centres and along roads in the area. They

asked people to check their sheds and garages in case she had taken shelter in one. There was torrential rain soon after she went missing.

Her sister was desperate to find her and made an appeal on ITV's The West Country Tonight for information.

Following the publicity, someone rang police to say they had seen Mary in a rural area of Winterbourne last Saturday. Officers searched the area and found the body off Swan Lane yesterday lunchtime.

The body has not been formally identified but Mary's family has been informed of the discovery.
