Few gave Yate Town a chance against Conference leaders Newport County in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round and it looked ominous when Jefferson Louis headed the Welsh side in front. But in the second half, Yate produced a fantastic fightback that took them to the brink of a place in the first round for the first time ever. Tom Knighton pulled Town level before setting up Mitchell Page to make it 2-1 and have the home fans daring to dream of a cup upset. A brilliant individual goal from Matt Groves incredibly then gave Yate a two-goal advantage as they made a mockery of their lowly southern league status. But the part-timers then began to tire and Newport pulled a goal back through Aaron O'Connor. Then came heartbreak in stoppage time as Tony James headed in to earn Newport a replay on Tuesday night.
The winners of Tuesday's replay will play Cheltenham Town at Whaddon Road in the first round next month. Yate manager Rob Cousins admitted his side tired towards the end of the game, while Newport boss Justin Edinburgh was relieved to rescue a replay, which will take place at Rodney Parade.
