An 81-year-old woman is recovering in hospital after suffering head injuries in a hammer attack at her home in Bristol.

It happened yesterday lunchtime (7 April). She had just collected her pension at Sea Mills Post Office in Shirehampton Road and had walked back to her home, which is nearby.

She was attacked from behind as she unlocked the door by a man who hit her around the head a number of times with a hammer.

Police say the attack could easily have had more serious or even fatal consequences.

Detective Inspector Andy Guither from Avon & Somerset Police says the attack showed an extreme level of violence.

The woman's 45-year-old son, who was inside the house, ran to her aid and fought with the offender, also being hit with the hammer during the struggle.

The offender then ran off along Trymside.
