A man who killed his childhood friend after a heavy drinking session has been jailed for more than five years. Richard Elmes denied killing Adrian Cooksey in Melksham in 2009. The builder was found dying in the street after being struck by a single punch.
He admitted lying in a previous case when an innocent man was in the dock charged with the killing. But a jury decided he was the man responsible for Mr Cooksey's death.
Here is a statement, issued today by Detective Chief Inspector Ian Saunders on behalf of Wiltshire Police.
Richard Elmes has been sentenced to 5 years and 2 months for the manslaughter of Adrian Cooksey, and perjury.
The two men had been socialising and were on their way home. There was an argument which resulted in Elmes delivering the blow which caused Adrian to fall and hit his head. Elmes then left the scene; he made no attempt to get Adrian any medical help.
For three years, Richard Elmes continually and deliberately lied about his involvement to police and lied under oath.
Throughout this investigation we have worked closely with Adrian’s family. We hope they can now find some peace of mind.
