A man has died after two lorries and several cars crashed on the M4 near Bristol. The accident caused huge delays for motorists throughout the day.

The eastbound carriageway was closed between junctions twenty and twenty-two, near Almondsbury. An investigation into the cause of the crash is now underway. Richard Payne reports.

Long tailbacks are continuing on the M4 after a fatal accident near Bristol.

A lorry driver died in the collision which happened on the eastbound carriageway close to the Almondsbury Interchange near Bristol this morning.

Motorists are being advised to "avoid the area completely."

A section of the M4 near Bristol is likely to be closed for most of the day after one person died in a motorway crash.

The road was closed after the incident between junctions 21 and 20, near the Almondsbury Interchange.

The accident involved two lorries and a car.

Police say the road will be closed for a "significant" part of the day.

They are asking motorists to avoid the area and said the M49 should be used as an alternative.

Great Western Ambulance said the lorry driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jill Risdale from the Highways Agency said there were "long tailbacks" in the area.

She said motorists should "avoid the area completely at the moment".

Traffic is queuing back as far as the toll booths on the Welsh side of the Second Severn Crossing.

A multi-vehicle pile-up on the M4 near Bristol is expected to cause problems for motorists for most of the day.

The motorway has been closed between junctions 21 and 20 Eastbound near Almondsbury following the crash.

Fire and ambulance crews are at the scene. One man is reported to be trapped in one of the vehicles.

Police are advising drivers to avoid the area if at all possible.

Vehicles travelling from the west along the M4 are being urged to use the M49.
