Online application opens

Wiltshire Police are launching their latest recruitment drive this morning. The online application process will open later and remain open for a full 10 days.

In January the recruitment campaign only lasted a few hours after 300,000 people logged on to the website in the first few hours it was open.

Wiltshire's 'wannabe' police

Wiltshire Police is holding a second recruitment drive this year. When they held one in January 300,000 people logged on to the computerised entry form within two hours - so they shut the operation down.

This time the force has reassured wannabe officers that the application process will be open for ten days.

But why is the force doing this so soon after the last one?

Our Wiltshire reporter Robert Murphy has the story.

Wiltshire Police to hold second recruitment drive

This is a tough application process and often applicants who made it through the first few stages don’t make it all the way through.

It is our job to ensure that this recruitment process enables us to get the right people for the role, giving us the best candidates as police officers.

This time, we are opening the recruitment online pre-assessment tool for ten days.

It will be accessible 24 hours a day and will close at 10am on Friday 22 November.

It takes around 46 weeks to progress through the various stages from the initial application stage to the date employment starts.

– Superintendent Charlie Armstrong, Head of People Standards and Support, Wiltshire Police

In total, 41 candidates of the 1064 applicants were successful from the January recruitment campaign.

Successful candidates are currently on provisional offers, subject to passing upcoming entry tests.

I am delighted that we are in a position to recruit additional police officers.

Although the service is facing many challenges, policing remains an excellent career choice.

It offers an exceptionally diverse career in public service, offering individuals the chance to make a real difference to local communities.

– Chief Constable Pat Geenty, Wiltshire Police

This recruitment campaign will help us to maintain police officer numbers and ensure that there continues to be a highly visible policing presence in our local communities.

We are also particularly encouraging applications from minority ethnic communities, as they are presently under-represented within Wiltshire Police.

– Angus Macpherson, Police and Crime Commissioner for Wiltshire and Swindon

Recruitment for new constables at Wiltshire Police was closed after just a few hours after the force's website had nearly 300,000 hits.

Demand was so high for the £19,000-a-year posts that the website initially crashed when applications were launched at 4pm yesterday.
