Bath Rugby's hooker Lee Mears is encouraging athletes to get regular health checks to prevent serious problems in the future. The England international player announced yesterday that he has been forced to retire, after a heart abnormality showed up on a cardiac screening.

It comes a week after a 13-year-old boy from Trowbridge had a heart attack while playing football. Tamsin Eames reports.

Bath Rugby's England international hooker Lee Mears announced yesterday that he has been forced to retire because of a heart problem.

The 33-year-old, who also represented the British Lions, was advised to stop playing after an abnormality showed up on a cardiac screening.

He spent 16 years with Bath, playing 268 games and made 42 appearances for England.
