A block of flats in Bristol has been evacuated because of the danger from an unstable chimney stack. Avon Fire Service believes the chimney, in Little Bishop Street in St Pauls, was hit by lightning in last night's storms.
The property next door has also been evacuted and the road closed as a precaution. Emergency crews are at the scene.
Heavy thunder and lightning storms across much of the service area led to more than 40 calls to Fire Control. At around 3:15am the downpour was followed by 999 calls from members of the public who had water entering their properties.
In total crews attended around 15 incidents of flooding where water was affecting the electricity supplies. Firefighters were able to help isolate the supply, ensuring the properties were safe.
The service also received around 25 calls to properties where alarms had activated as a result of the thunder and lightning.
