Project to plug ancient Bath Abbey holes

An £18 million project to fill in a honeycomb of holes under Bath Abbey is underway. Centuries of crumbling coffins and their contents mean that urgent work is needed to fill in the holes.

For hundreds of years, people have been buried under the floor of Bath Abbey. It's estimated around six thousand bodies lie under the flagstones.

But more recently, great voids have been discovered where coffins have crumbled.

Now they've started a project to fill in the holes and make the floor stable. Robert Murphy reports.
