Inquest into student bin death

An inquest has heard how a Bristol student was crushed to death after climbing into a bin.

Garrett Elsey was 22 and from Canada. He'd only just arrived in the city in September last year. His body was found at a recycling plant in Avonmouth.

The inquest heard the student had been out drinking and had been so drunk that staff at MBargo nightclub in Clifton had asked him to leave. Outside, he got lost, cold and disorientated.

Garrett ended up asleep in a wheelie bin and when a refuse company arrived in the morning, he was tipped into the lorry, along with all the rubbish and crushed to death.

It was only when the lorry was emptied out at the depot that its crew realised what had happened.

Today the coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death. The refuse company says its staff were deeply affected by Garrett's death and they now look inside all bins before emptying them.
