An adventurer from Gloucester has celebrated his 27th birthday halfway through a gruelling 5,000 mile run across Canada.

Jamie McDonald's coast-to-coast run is raising money for SickKids Foundation, Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity and the Pied Piper Appeal.

Time is against him; Jamie has just 120 days to finish 100 marathons, because his travel visa runs out in mid-December.

He suffered from a debilitating immune deficiency and potentially fatal spinal condition syringomyelia as a child, and spent the first nine years of his life in and out of children's hospitals.

He said: "To reach the halfway mark when so many said I wouldn't make it is incredible, but the hard work is about to begin - I haven't hit the Rockies yet.

"I'm very much taking a Forrest Gump approach to the run and basically just waking up and putting one foot in front of the other, there is no real planning here."
