A new 'dispersal zone' has been set up in Weston-super-Mare to try to stop anti-social behaviour and criminal damage. Police will now be able to stop groups of people gathering in the Alexandra Parade area where there have problems reported since the beginning of the school holidays. Alcohol has been seized in that time, along with cigarettes and three arrests have been made.

Anyone under 16 years old will not be allowed in the area between 9pm and 6am unless they are with a responsible person over 18 years old. If they are found in the area between those times they could be taken home by the police, or arrested.

Mounted police officers will be patrolling the area and CCTV will be used to monitor the situation.

“We have consulted with more than 150 businesses and residents and collated their views. They said that they felt unsafe and intimidated by the large groups of young people congregating in the Alexandra Parade area."

“Our intention is not to move the problem on, but to nip it in the bud and to remove the core group of troublemakers. It is also about protecting people, particularly those under-16s who are staying out late in the area without a responsible adult. If we are worried for them and their welfare, we will take them to their parents or carers who will be informed of our concerns around the issues in which they have been involved."

– Inspector Sharon Bennett

The zone is encompassed by the following streets: Grove Lane (including Grove Park), Waterloo Street, George Street, Station Road, Edinburgh Place, the seafront area, including the beach and Beach Lawns and Lower Church Road.
