Archaeologists from Bristol University are carrying out a survey of College Green. The team is working with Bristol Cathedral to identify sites such as graves and buildings which may lie buried below the surface.
The survey will cover the whole Green and is being done in the early morning so it doesn't affect visitors to the area.
The Olympic flame has set off on the fifth day of its journey through the west.
It was lit on College Green in Bristol after staying under high security in the city. The first torchbearer today being fundraiser Maggie Glastonbury.
