Major operation to rescue 11-year-old boy who fell down Cheddar Gorge

A major rescue operation took place late this afternoon after reports that an 11-year-old boy had fallen down Cheddar Gorge. Rescue volunteers have described how the boy, who was with his mother, fell off a rocky outcrop onto a gravel ledge, landing on his face.
The boy suffered a head injury and is said to be in a serious condition at Bristol's Frenchay Hospital having been airlifted there by Portland Coastguard.
– Duncan Massey, Avon and Somerset Search and RescueThe boy was in a serious/critical condition. There was a multi-agency response which was appropriate. Volunteer rescue teams were also at the scene. The patient has got the best possible outcome from the rescue operation and we wish him a full recovery.
