Somerset County Council reports significant surface water flooding on most of the low lying highway network. The higher ground is seeing rapid surface water run-off from adjacent land on to the highway – in some cases carrying a large amount of debris.
Of particular note:
A39 Polsham – passable with extreme care
A361 Steambow near Pilton – serious flooding
Cannards Grave, Shepton Mallet – flooded
A39 Nether Stowey – road closed
A39 Cannington – road closed
A371 Croscombe – river expected to burst its banks – major flooding expected
A family from Melksham on holiday in Gloucestershire over Christmas had to be rescued from their cottage after being marooned by the floods.
Tyntesfield Estate in North Somerset has been forced to close after the visitor centre was flooded.
RNLI volunteers are on stand by as the region braces itself for more rain. Winds of up to 70mph are also expected.
