Roo the Alsatian died yesterday in the arms of his keeper after a sparkling career with Avon and Somerset Police. During his 6 years of service, Roo and his handler PC Jim Hampson won awards for best training progress, and for the highest arrest rate (202 in one year).

By the end of his career, 70% of all the force's canine catches (or "bites" as they are known) were made by Roo. After retiring he spent four years with a friend of PC Hampson's.
