Large fire at Waitrose in Wellington

Fire fighters have spent the morning tackling a large fire at a supermarket in Somerset.

Crews were called to the Waitrose building on Wellington High Street just after 6am. Upon arrival, they requested another four fire appliances as well as an incident command vehicle.

Here's what happened :

Update at 06:16 hrs - One corner of the roof containing food is well alight. Fire crews have requested a further two fire appliances from Cullompton and Tiverton and an aerial ladder platform from Taunton. Fire crews are at work using four breathing apparatus wearers and two hose reel jets.

Update at 06:22 hrs - The Police have been requested to attend this incident.

Update at 06:33 hrs - The fire is now contained to one corner of the building. The property is fully smoke logged. Fire crews are now at work with three main jets, one hose reel jet and two breathing apparatus wearers.

Update at 06:25 hrs - The corner of the roof has now collapsed. Wessex Water and the Environment Agency has been made aware of this incident.

Update at 06:49 hrs - This is a single storey convenience supermarket. Fire crews are at work with external firefighting activities with one main jet, one compressed air foam systems jet, one hose reel jet and four breathing apparatus wearers.

Update at 06:59 hrs - Fire crews have requested the attendance of a second aerial ladder platform from Bridgwater.

Update at 07:19 hrs - Fire crews are utlitising hydrants for water. The gas supply and electricity supply at this premises has now been isolated.

Fire crews are currently at work with ladders for access, two main jets, one hose reel jet and four breathing apparatus wearers from the external of the building. Police are advising local residents to shut all doors and windows. Fire crews have also requested the attendance of Western Power.

Update at 07:46 hrs - The Fire Service is currently carrying out fire investigation at this incident.

Update at 07:51 hrs - Fire crews have requested the attendance of an incident support unit from Yeovil for additional drinking water, firefighter welfare and salvage equipment.

Update at 07:54 hrs - The Environment Agency have been informed of a quantity of run off entering the water courses from this incident.

Update at 07:56 hrs - Fire crews have requested the attendance of a buildings inspector from Taunton Deane Borough Council.

Update at 08:29 hrs - Two aerial ladder platforms are now being used for access to inspect hot spots using a thermal image camera and cut away areas affected by fire using small tools.

Update at 09:28 - The fire is now believed to be out and crews are currently at work monitoring hotspots. 50% of the roof has been destroyed by fire and was extinguished using 4 sets of Breathing Apparatus, 2 Hose Reel Jets and 2 Main Jets. Electricity and gas to this premises has been isolated.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
