Unemployment in the South West has risen by 2%

The latest unemployment figures for the South West have risen by almost 2 percent to 179,000 people out of work.That's in contrast with the national picture where unemployment has fallen for the first time in almost a year, leaving 2.65 million people out of work.The new figures have been released today by the Office for National Statistics.

There is some hope for young jobseekers, with the number of unemployed people aged 16 to 24 dropping by 9000, the lowest total since last autumn.

City College Plymouth says its students are trying everything they can to make their cv's stand out.Eddie Beech, Careers Co-ordinator at City College Plymouth: "A lot of our students are now getting involved in voluntary work, doing work placements, getting involved in internships, also extra-curricular activities, Duke of Edinburgh awards scheme, anything that shows there's a little bit more to them than just a student, or a young person."
