"Plastic Princess designed to breed", "a shop window mannequin" and a "plastic smile" are the damning phrases in the Daily Mail article described by the paper as a venomous attack on the Duchess of Cambridge by Devon-based, award-winning author Hilary Mantel. As an author she has won acclaim for her accounts on Cromwell and Tudor England in which she writes frankly about the glorious and dark side of historic royalty.

The comments were originally made in a lecture at the British Museum for the London Review of Books. It is easy to condemn her provocative language as a personal attack but read, or listen, first to the speech. Its her opinion of perhaps the systems that surround princesses as she compares her top predecessors. In Budleigh Salterton today some residents were surprised by the scandal that has arisen.
