Transatlantic boat race begins

25 skippers have started their journey across the Atlantic Ocean in a gruelling solo race.

The Transat bakerly got underway today (May 2) from Sutton Harbour. Boats have been arriving for over week for final preparations.

Hundreds crowded at the harbourside in Plymouth to watch the boats begin a 3050nm race to New York.

It's taken about a year for us to organise this event and to see the boats start was a great achievement.

We've got two women in the race which is great. Solo racing is an event when men and women can compete each other and go head to head.

I'll be flying to New York in a few days to oversee the first boats that cross the finish line.
