Olympic diver Tom Daley was among local athletes honoured at a civic reception in Plymouth this evening.

The Lord Mayor wanted to recognise those who competed in this year's Olympic, Paralympic and Invictus Games.

Plymouth is massively proud of all its elite athletes and their achievements this year. It’s fantastic that so many of our sportsmen and women were selected to take part in Rio 2016 and the Invictus Games in Orlando.

We were all over the moon to see Tom Daley and Dan Goodfellow win bronze in the Olympics but many people may not have realised that three of our Invictus athletes brought home six medals between them.

All of the athletes who competed in Brazil and Florida worked incredibly hard to be there and I’m sure the city is behind me in saying a huge ‘congratulations’ – not just to them but their coaches, clubs, friends and family, who support them all year round.

– The Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Councillor Pauline Murphy

And it was a case of hugs not handshakes. Our reporter Jeff Welch caught up with Tom Daley shortly after the ceremony.
