Two farm animals have been attacked in Somerset and Dorset in separate incidents.
A farmer in Charmy Down near Bath discovered one of his cows dead with part of its face and tongue removed last week.
A lamb was then found shot in a field near Sherborne with what police believe was a high-powered rifle.
Police say the cow was probably harmed overnight on Saturday June 10 and was found mutilated with 'a significant degree of precision'.
They believe the lamb also suffered its injuries overnight 24 hours later on Sunday June 11.
The incidents have been described as 'unusual and distressing' and police say they are keen to hear from anyone who may have information.
People are asked to call 101 or text information to the Rural Crime Team on 07492888109.
