PM removes whip from Devon MP over use of the 'n' word

Theresa May has removed the whip from Anne Marie Morris over her use of racist language in a meeting. It means she the Newton Abbot MP is no longer a Tory.

Anne Marie Morris was recorded making the comments in a discussion about the impact of Brexit.

  • Listen to the audio of the Conservative MP's exchange

The Conservative MP, who backs Brexit, described the prospect of leaving the European Union with no deal as "the real n***** in the woodpile".

There were growing calls for the Prime Minister to take action and she responded very quickly. This is what she had to say:

I was shocked to hear of these remarks, which are completely unacceptable.

I immediately asked the Chief Whip to suspend the party whip.

Language like this has absolutely no place in politics or in today’s society.

Outgoing Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron was one of those appalled by Anne Marie Morris' use of the 'n' word. This is what he said before the Prime Minister acted:

This disgusting comment... has no place in our Parliament.

The Conservative Party should withdraw the whip from Anne-Marie Morris and they should do it today.

Every hour they leave her in place is a stain on them and the so called 'compassionate conservatism' they supposedly espouse.

I am utterly shocked that this person represents the good people of Newton Abbot.

– Tim Farron, Outgoing Liberal Democrat leader

Anne Marie Morris has apologised. She said her comment was "entirely unintentional", adding: "I apologise unreservedly for any offence caused".
