There have been major delays on the M5 in south Gloucestershire, following an earlier fatal accident, in which a male pedestrian was hit by a lorry at around 4.40am, Thursday 15 September.

He was then struck by a number of other vehicles, dying at the scene.

Police believe he might have left his car, after parking it on the hard shoulder. They are working to identify the victim and contact his next of kin.

We have to make sure we've completed all our investigative enquiries at the scene and ensure the motorway is cleared and safe to use.

This work is progressing well and we hope to re-open the carriageway as soon as possible, but we can't put a time estimate on this yet.

We appreciate everyone's continued patience and understanding."

– CHIEF INSPECTOR JOHN HOLT, AVON & SOMERSET POLICE

Two northbound lanes remain closed, while investigation work is being carried out between Junction 14 Thornbury and Junction 16 Aztec West.
