An explosion at a flat in Chippenham town centre has left a man with severe burns and in hospital.

Wiltshire Police were called by firefighters at 6.20pm last night, 17 October to the town's Market Place.

Two other residents were taken out of the building safely and places in temporary accommodation.

Meanwhile the man, who was first treated on site, has been transferred to a specialist burns hospital in Swansea after a spell at Southmead Hospital.

The flat, above a BetFred shop, remains cordoned off, along with the Blue Cross charity shop, all the way up St Marys street, up to the small short stay car park and Timber street.

All the buildings within the cordon are being evacuated, while authorities investigate the cause of the fire.

We are currently at the very early stages of the investigation. We are working with the fire and rescue service and Wiltshire Council to secure the property, which has sustained significant structural damage.

We would like to thank local businesses who have provided refreshments, shelter and accommodation during the evening as well as volunteers from the British Red Cross who are supporting anyone affected.”
