To mark the end of Alcohol Awareness Week, we have been hearing the remarkable story of Dave Brice, who is now a successful counsellor.

He is proof you can turn your life around even when you've reached absolute rock bottom.

Alcohol nearly killed him, but he fought back and his life is now unrecognisable from just a few years ago.

As a counsellor he's now helping others turn their lives around.

I tried killing myself in a car. I crashed it into a house and smashed myself right up. I was 3 times over the legal limit. It got to a point were I was nearly drinking 250 units of alcohol a week.

That had a massive impact on my health. I was given a year to live if I carried on drinking.

Following his prognosis, Dave decided to turn his life around and stop drinking.

He is now a counsellor for Hawkspring, a service that supports drug and alcohol recovery.

The skills that you learn when you commit to recovery, there is nothing that will stand in your way. I decided that because I couldn't drink, I would start hiking hills.

I lost a lot of weight. I wanted to be able to apologise to my son for what I did to him and what I put him through. I had the pleasure of climbing Snowden with him.

I get more of a buzz with life then I ever did with alcohol. My life is a thousand times better now.
