Cornish Bishop outraged by levels of homelessness

A Cornish Bishop says it's an outrage that there are so many homeless people in the county.

The Bishop of St Germans Chris Goldsmith has been championing the cause of the homeless.

He says a solution has to be found to a problem which he describes as a tragedy.

We've actually started a campaign this year to end street homelessness in Cornwall. It's a tragedy and actually it's an outrage that as an affluent country by international standards we are in the UK, there are so many men and women who don't have a home.

Clearly in Cornwall there are real issues with homelessness. As you are probably aware, we actually have the third highest level of street homelessness in the country.

The only place in the country with a worse record are London and Brighton.That's extraordinary for a place like Cornwall and yet it's a reality.

Folk who are struggling with homelessness.They'll be all sorts of things they are having to deal with,whether it'll be mental health issues,whether it'll be breakdowns in relationships,whether it's financial issues.

The Bishop is also acting Bishop of Truro until the post is filled following the departure of Tim Thornton in the summer. Despite his busy schedule he is determined to treat the homeless issue as a top priority.
