Emergency services in Somerset continue to help stranded motorists as Storm Emma affects travel across the county.

The West Country has received heavy snowfall during the past 18 hours.

Avon and Somerset Police are urging people not to travel.

The force says it is currently dealing with 20 'significant incidents' across Avon and Somerset with people stranded in snow drifts.

The red and amber weather warnings have now expired but a yellow warning remains in place across the county. Partner agencies who are meeting regularly to share information and support have been providing 4x4 vehicle support. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue provided their 4x4 vehicles to ferry essential staff to and from the Yeovil District Hospital, something that is being replicated in other parts of Avon and Somerset.

The A39 between Cannington and Holford has been closed and Butlins have confirmed that a planned weekend international darts competition – the UK Open - at Pontins Minehead will not be open to the public and people should not attempt to travel to the event.

All agencies throughout the Avon and Somerset force area are stretched but continue to work together, sharing resources and working to well-rehearsed plans.
